Basic Crochet: Anyone Can Do it

Basic CrochetCrochet is a method of creating thick fabric with yarn. It is also one of the most basic needlecrafts that a person can learn. Many people choose to learn basic crochet before attempting knitting or another type of needlecraft. Crocheting is fairly simple and only requires a crochet hook and yarn of your choice.

Getting Started

The first step in starting to crochet is making the beginning loop. To do this you will pinch the end of the yarn in your fingers approximately one inch from the end. Next, twirl the yarn around your finger one time. This will create a loop. With your free hand, pull the loop off of your finger so that you will be holding the loop in your hand. Take the crochet hook and insert it through the center of the loop. Hook the yarn and pull it back through the loop. This will create a knot to get started with your first basic crochet project.

Positioning the Yarn & Crochet Hook

Now that you have created the basic beginning loop, you can start the actual crochet process. Put the crochet hook through the loop and pull hook the thread and pull the yarn through the loop. Be sure to keep the crochet hook in the loop at this point and continue this same pattern of pulling yarn through each loop with the crochet hook. This is your first basic crochet chain. When you reach the end of a specific row for the project you are creating, simply go back along the other side looping both the bottom loop and the new loop created.

Getting Help with the Basics

Crochet comes easy for some people, but others will need additional help in understanding the process. You can choose to get additional help through instructional books or videos that can be purchased at your local craft store. If those are not adequate enough, check the local newspaper for a schedule of when there are crochet and knitting classes available.

Deciding on a Project

Once you have mastered the basics of crochet, it will be time to find a project that you would like to complete. There are free downloadable patterns available online as well as a variety of different books and magazines that provide craft patterns for crochet. Crochet opens up a world to a variety of different types of crafts. You can create everything from dish scrubbies and wash cloths to sweaters and scarves. Best of all, each item will be uniquely made and created by you for the recipient. This adds extra “wow” to the gift because it came from your hard work and effort.
